Brief Report-
On 28th February 2023, Dr. D.Y. Patil B-School organized a captivating two-hour session featuring speaker Mr. Kennedy Samuel, who shed light on the topic of "Boosting Your Brain Power." The session commenced with an intriguing question posed by Mr. Samuel: What distinguishes the brain from the mind, and how does the brain function in our everyday lives? Through an engaging interaction with the students, it was concluded that the mind and the brain are interconnected, although the terms are often used interchangeably. The brain is perceived as a tangible organ composed of nerve cells, whereas the mind is intangible, existing in the realm of thoughts and consciousness.
Mr. Samuel proceeded to enlighten the audience about our collective desire to enhance focus, memory, and concentration. However, he debunked the notion propagated online that special foods, supplements, games, or apps are necessary to achieve these goals. Such misinformation can be overwhelming and cause mental strain.
Furthermore, Mr. Samuel emphasized how the daily functioning of our brains directly impacts our mental well-being. Our brain's performance influences our emotions, mood swings, level of focus, and overall productivity. Consequently, it would be beneficial if we could consistently maintain a state of focus and internal motivation. To attain optimal brain function, Mr. Samuel suggested incorporating nine habits into our lifestyle:
- Expose yourself to ample sunlight.
- Minimize consumption of refined sugar.
- Optimize your sleep patterns.
- Engage in daily physical activity.
- Cultivate awareness of small moments of happiness.
- Practice meditation.
- Include omega-3 fatty acids in your diet.
- Stay adequately hydrated.
- Start your day with music.
As an individual with a keen interest in the philosophy of science, Mr. Samuel also discussed the significance of stocking up on essential vitamins and micronutrients. Certain vitamins and nutrients have been found to enhance brain power in different ways. For instance, zinc and iodine contribute to normal brain cognition, while vitamin B6, B12, and folate help combat fatigue, a common cause of procrastination during studying. Additionally, omega-3 and its essential fatty acid, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), support proper brain function, a crucial aspect of learning. Therefore, incorporating these nutrients into our daily diet is essential.
Overall, the session was brief yet interactive, providing students with invaluable knowledge to boost their brain power and improve their overall well-being.
