Detail Report
Dr. D. Y. Patil B-School, Tathawade, organized an informative and inspiring guest session titled “Mutual Funds & Career Opportunities in the Asset Management Industry” on 28th June 2025, as part of the induction program for MBA (Marketing and Finance) students. The session was delivered by Mr. Shivam Desai, Zonal HR at NJ Group, a reputed organization in the mutual fund distribution and wealth management sector.
Mr. Desai began the session by simplifying the concept of mutual funds, explaining their types, structure, and the various stakeholders involved. He highlighted how mutual funds serve as a convenient and professionally managed investment option for retail investors, contributing to financial inclusion in India.
Emphasizing the importance of early investing, he explained the difference between saving and investing, and used relatable examples to show how starting a SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) early can significantly grow wealth over time due to the power of compounding.
The session also covered how mutual funds work, including the concept of Net Asset Value (NAV), types of investment plans (SIP vs Lumpsum), and key aspects of fund management, risk, and returns. Mr. Desai introduced students to digital investing platforms like robo-advisors, passive funds, and ESG-focused mutual funds, showing how the mutual fund industry is being transformed by fintech innovations.
From a career perspective, Mr. Desai explained the various roles available in AMCs (Asset Management Companies), distribution firms, and advisory roles. He highlighted key roles such as investment analysts, relationship managers, sales executives, and digital marketers. Certifications like NISM were recommended for students looking to enter the industry.
For marketing students, he focused on how mutual funds are marketed, the role of investor behavior, branding, trust-building, and digital campaigns in gaining investor confidence. The discussion included real-life examples of successful financial literacy and awareness drives by NJ Group.
Mr. Desai also outlined the future growth potential of the mutual fund industry in India, driven by increased retail participation, rising income levels, and regulatory support. He encouraged students to view the industry not just as investors, but as professionals who can contribute to its development.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A round, where students asked questions related to career entry points, required skills, market outlook, and investment tips. Mr. Desai motivated the students by stating:
“If you start investing early, you are not just building wealth – you are building discipline, vision, and a financially secure future.”
His real-world insights, career guidance, and motivational words made the session extremely relevant and impactful for the students of both marketing and finance backgrounds.
We sincerely thank Mr. Shivam Desai for taking the time to enrich our students with his knowledge and for guiding them toward a brighter and more informed career in the mutual fund and financial services industry.
