Industrial Visit to Piaggio – Experiencing Excellence in Manufacturing Operations

Objectives:
1. To Provide Practical Exposure: To bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application by exposing students to real-time manufacturing operations.
2. To Understand Production Systems:To observe and analyze various stages of the production process including assembly, quality control, and packaging in a live industrial setting.
3. To Learn About Quality and Process Management: To gain knowledge about lean manufacturing techniques, quality assurance practices, and safety protocols followed in an internationally recognized facility.
4. To Foster Industry-Academia Interaction: To encourage dialogue between students and industry professionals, providing insights into current trends, technological advancements, and operational strategies.
5. To Understand Industry Challenges and Innovation: To comprehend how challenges in manufacturing are tackled through innovation, process optimization, and strategic management.
The industrial visit to Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., Pune, offered an immersive and insightful experience for our students into the world of automobile manufacturing. Piaggio, a globally reputed name in the automotive sector, is known for its commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainability. The visit provided students with a rare opportunity to witness the behind-the-scenes workings of a leading manufacturing unit.
Upon arrival, students were warmly welcomed by the Piaggio team and given a brief presentation on the company’s history, product portfolio, and global presence. This was followed by a guided tour of the production floor, where students observed:

Automated and Semi-Automated Systems
Quality Inspection Stations
Inventory and Logistics Management
Students were particularly fascinated by the systematic workflow, discipline of operations, and strict adherence to safety and quality standards maintained throughout the production cycle. The real-time experience helped students understand complex manufacturing concepts such as Just-in-Time (JIT), Six Sigma practices, Kaizen, and Total Quality Management (TQM).
In addition to technical exposure, students had the opportunity to interact with plant managers and engineers who shared valuable insights into operational challenges, manpower management, supply chain dynamics, and sustainability initiatives. These discussions enabled students to relate their classroom knowledge with practical industrial scenarios.
The visit also highlighted the vital role Pune plays as a manufacturing hub in India, offering students a broader perspective on regional industrial growth, infrastructure, and career opportunities in the sector.
