On day 1, during the first session of the workshop, Ms. Abha Bansal made a presentation on Basic Writing Skills which covered areas like Punctuation, Commonly Confused words and Basic Grammar. After the presentation, the participants were given a few worksheets on these areas and their performance was evaluated and necessary feedback on how to improve these skills was given.

In the second session, a presentation on Business Email Writing, which gave necessary tips and guidelines on drafting formal emails, was followed by the participants’ drafting emails in groups on their own on some given topics. They were made to read out the drafts and necessary corrections and clarifications were suggested by the resource person.

In the third session in the afternoon, the participants were given some useful information on telephone etiquettes. Then they were given some exercises and role play sessions where they were asked to use appropriate language – both formal and informal – while making telephonic conversations. This followed with the resource person giving some useful information and tips on drafting business/official letters and the participants were asked to work in groups and write out formal letters making use of the tips and following the guide lines given. The online breakout sessions were arranged for the participants to discuss and complete the given assignment. After the groups finished writing, some of them were asked to read out the letter drafted by their group and they were given suggestions as how the letters could have been made more appropriate and effective.

Day 2 of the workshop began with understanding communication barrier. Ms. Abha Bansal taught various law of remembering on the three grounds- recently, frequently, on dramatical grounds e.g. famous movie lines and on application basis. Improper listening, fear of offendig, feeling uncomfortable in expressing one’s emotions, lack of knowledge and non-verbal behavior were considered to be as barriers towards ineffective communication.

In session 5 key elements of improving communication was discussed. Students were divided into equal groups and breakout rooms were assigned to them to carry out the activity assigned to them. Within each group- subgroups were created were one person was supposed to speak on a topic he/she desires and other group was supposed to listen. Feedbacks were taken from the group members about what was spoken and what about their opinion on the same topic. This way each group was judged on the grounds of – level of attention paid, their involvement and expressions while their group member was speaking.

In the session 6 the trainer gave detailed session on how to behave as a participant when someone is speaking. The session mainly dealt with effective listening skills. Towards the end of the session, a few participants gave their feedback explaining how the program helped them improve their communication skills and made them more confident of using English in a better way.
