On January 1, 2024, Dr. D.Y. Patil B-School’s Startup and Innovation Cell, in collaboration

session featured Mr. Avelo Roy, Managing Director and startup Mentor at Kolkata Venture,
as the resource person and chief speaker. The event commenced with a gracious welcome
extended to the guest, accompanied by a round of enthusiastic applause. The central theme of
the session revolved around Innovation Development, Technology Readiness, Lab Tech
Commercialization, and Tech Transfer.
Mr. Roy initiated the discourse by delving into the intricacies of the Patent System in India.
He elucidated the pivotal role patents play, emphasizing their relevance in industrial applications
concerning processes, products, or both. Exploring the nuances of Patent Applications, he
delineated the various types including ordinary patent applications, convention applications,
and PCT-international applications.
With a structured approach, Mr. Roy elucidated the stages involved in the patenting process,
offering insights into the journey from filing to the granting of patents. The presentation's
organized layout facilitated a comprehensive understanding of the sequential progression
through each stage.

A captivating segment of the session centered around Intellectual Property Rights (IPR),
characterized as creations of the mind encompassing inventions, literary works, and artistic
expressions. Mr. Roy highlighted the significance of different types of IPR, encompassing
patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, elucidating their respective roles in
safeguarding intellectual assets.
Concluding the session, Mr. Roy engaged participants in a thought-provoking activity,
prompting each student to contemplate their company's potential patents, trademarks, and
trade secrets. This interactive exercise fostered a deeper understanding of the practical application
of the concepts discussed throughout the session.
In essence, the Mentoring Event served as a platform for students to gain invaluable insights
into the intricacies of patent systems, intellectual property rights, and their implications for
innovation, entrepreneurship, and business development. The session enriched participants'
knowledge and ignited a sense of curiosity and awareness regarding the protection and
commercialization of intellectual assets in the dynamic landscape of modern business.
